  The 4004 was (I believe) the first microprocessor to come out of
Intel.  It was 4-bits wide and was designed for desktop calculator
applications.  Following it was the 8008, an 8-bit microprocessor,
which was used in several hobbyist microcomputers in the early-mid
70's...the Scelbi 8B comes to mind.  The 8008 was followed by the
8080, which I'm sure everyone here knows about.
