Yes, welcome to the club. The version numbering and naming conventions
of DEC are all part of a vast conspiracy to waste valuable neural real
estate. Just think of it as a really challenge game in which the rules
change with every new model released.
NetBSD/VAX doesn't run on the VAXstation 4000's today, but it may be
supported at some point in the future. So if the machine's not costing
you anything, I'd certainly recommend holding onto it for a while. At the
very least you can get a hobbyist license of VMS for it (if you're into
that sort of thing).
The NetBSD/VAX port supporters consist of a rather odd lot. It seems like
there's an ample following, but maybe not quite enough people with
backgrounds to integrate new families of machines to the port. It's a
shame as there's such a wide variety of interesting VAXen which seem to be
getting cheaper every week. I know support for an 11/730 port was very
strong here a couple of months ago. Okay, I'm drifting here...
