Here's a reference point:

I compiled libdes* on all my machines a couple of days ago. Included was
a test program aptly called "speed" that measures how fast your machine
can run the encryption software.

According to that program my Compaq 386SX-16 with 6MB is three times
faster than my VAXstation 2000 also with 6MB. Both were running
NetBSD-current.

Not sure how an 11/730 compares to a VS2K on CPU performance, but
probably somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50-75% of a VS2K (please
correct me if I'm wrong).

*) No, I did not export DES from the US. I found it freely available on
an ftp site in Australia: ftp://samba.anu.edu.au/pub/libdes/
