FYI: 3100 series booting.
For DEC software (VMS and ULtrix) the various devices common to that system
are supported. Netboot via MOP, TK50/70 (scsi version) tape and floppy were
used. The floppy obiously was the least desired (vms on 1.44 floppy was
~70-100 disks) and not very practical. Tape however was common and that
included diags though the internal ones were more than adaquate for FRU
level repairs.
The #100 was not alone with the SCSI bus as the ba213 systems
(vs2000/3200/3400/3500) also had scsi and it was common to configure the
system disk on a running machine and carry it to the new one or use a "copy
disk" in the form of an adaquately sized RZ with the base OS and utilities
that would be copied to the resident disk. After that DECNET was the
transport for any other needed applications.
I may add within DEC RD53/4s (for Microvax-IIs) with VMS or ultrix were
used to start virgin systems or upgrade them via image copying the copy
disk to the systems media. It was faster than TK50, and the base system
could be preconfigured.
