There is hope, for I have finally got my VaxStation2000 to boot from
its own hard drive and come up without (too many) error messages.
My Hardware: VaxStation2000, 6MB ram, 4PLN (as yet unusable, no drivers
and no monitor/kbd/mouse), RD54.
My Arduous Trek to Self-Sufficient Booting: Use built-in formatter
to prep drive, Netboot from a Linux(2.0.30) box (only 2x81MB disk and 8MB
ram, TIGHT!), figure out disklabel, untar snapshot, figure out boot, et
voila! (It only took me 2-1/2 weeks.)
Next up is figuring out how to "compile the world" (sources are
650MB?!?), and put in newusers. (This seems to be way different from
Linux.) Thereafter I hope to get my old uVaxII up and running using
TK50s. (Allison: I may be able to help, once I figure it out for myself!)

Thanks to all for your help and for putting up with my multiple
frustration-venting questions.
