Nevermind. (I feel stupid now!) I grabbed the first 8k from the wrong 
tape image... the (right) way (I think) should be:
# dd if=tk50-file1-12G of=/usr/mdec/dboot bs=512 count=16

PS: Don't shoot me until I get my bullet-proof vest on!
