  The generic kernel does this (at least in 1.2C--I don't have 1.2G happening
yet.)  You need to configure and build a kernel with proper device names.

  Possibly the generic kernel doesn't have support for your network interface,
or your network interface is at a different address from what the kernel
expects.  Can you more fully describe your hardware configuration...
