You may want to take a look at section 2 in SMM, "Building 4.4BSD Kernels
with config". I think that this document is taken out from the NetBSD source
tree because it describes the old config and is therefore outdated, but 
it is anyway a good starting point to understand how config works.
It is in the 4.4BSD source tree, or if you can't find it elsewhere,
ftp.luth.se:/pub/OS/4.4BSD_Lite/usr/src/usr.sbin/config/SMM.doc (I think :-)
I think a real rewriting of this document to apply to the new config would
be very welcome by all ports.
