Well, I have finally built that annoying ld. I restarted from scratch
this morning and documented all the steps (about 30) I took and what
happened. I ended up with the same problem, but then I defined NetBSD
and didn't define CROSS_LINKER. That did it. I just compiled a few
test programs, and they worked perfectly. gdb on my VS2000 also
understood all of the debugging information.
If anybody is interested in setting up cross compilation from Linux, I
think I could help.
BTW. Note that there are a few catches with cross compilation (eg.
files created by running executables or machine-dependant scripts), but
I still think it is useful. I don't know if it qualifies as cheating
though. :-)
