Hi,

	Do you have bad blocks in your hard disk? I had symptoms like this
	after getting 'command xxx completed with status xxx' messages during
	copying. The machine tries to boot but fails, maybe because the kernel 
	read into memory contains garbage in some places...

	I got around this by re-sizing partitions so that bad blocks were not
	in critical areas.

If it helps, I obtain exactly the same behaviour on my VS2000....
