Check ps -ax to see if you have getty processes running for each of the 
serial ports.

You have to go to /etc/ttys and turn on the respective terminals.
Change tty00 to ttyS0 etc. and replace "off" with "on" in the second to 
last column. Remove the keyword "secure" to prevent root logins on the 
serial ports.
