My poor old Sun 3/60 build system has just completed a mostly current
(19980317) snapshot, however, there was one small problem:

(cd /usr/src/share/man && make makedb)
/usr/libexec/makewhatis /altroot/usr/share/man
install -c -o root -g wheel  -m 444 /tmp/whatis2359
/altroot/altroot/usr/share/m
an/whatis.db
install: /altroot/altroot/usr/share/man/whatis.db: No such file or directory
*** Error code 1

Stop.

I'll be poking my nose into this shortly. Oddly, this didn't appear to stop
the works...
