Duh,

  It turns out I had a typo in /etc/hostname.le0 (last digit of ip addr
wrong);
fixing this allowed me to tftp to myself and my XTerm boots ok (apart from
xdm,
but that's another story..)

  So, I'm intrigued. Why did a le0 configuration problem confuse
tftp when plod (my 3/60) was tftp'ing to itself? Why did ping, telnet, etc
work to and from the XTerm (through le0) without problems? ... odd.
