I've seen the same problem on out company network. Tracing with a packet analyzer
shows that there is a 'BSDI BSD/OS 2.0.1' box that picks up the bootparam
request and reply's 'I don't know this one'.
My box (DataGeneral Aviion) fell over with a "'whoami' call failed"

Temporarily pulling the network plug from the BSDI machine solved it.
