This sounds as though you are using someone's pre-built kernel.  I have
no idea how well or badly any such kernel would behave; I always build
my own kernels from source.  If I use a pre-built kernel, it's either
only until I get it up far enough to build my own kernel, or because
for some reason (broken source tree, insufficient disk space, etc) I
can't build my own kernel.

And yeah, it does sound like a missing compatability option to me.
