Subject: OK, I give up: Modems on 3/50 with NetBSD -- How?

I've tried several gettytab settings and several modem configurations, and
can't seem to get a V.34 modem to work as a dial-in when connected to a
serial port on a Sun 3/50 running NetBSD. Right now, the port echoes
everything it hears from the modem and vice versa, causing an infinite
loop. (The internal ring buffer then overflows, and the console -- even
though it's /dev/kd and not a serial port -- becomes useless.) How does one
set the system to configure the modem? To answer the phone? To autobaud
and/or lock the modem at a particular speed? To log the user out if
carrier is dropped? And is there a fix for the console lockup problem?
Certainly, it's not good to have the console lock up when a serial port is
experiencing problems.
