That was a problem with the 1.1 alpha binaries (only used tty console).
There is a new "install" set on ftp.netbsd.org that corrects the problem.
Also, there should soon be an even more recent install set for the sun3
in the upcoming patch release for 1.1 (not sure when). The files for
that patch are also on ftp.netbsd.org in: /ftp/pub/NetBSD/arch/sun3
