Well to sum it up, there are two issues:

1.
I have Creator3D as the console, but kernel hangs with the last line
printed - 'machfb0: initializing the DSP'

2.
Commenting out machfb from kernel config and when at OpenBoot I have
'setenv output-device screen:r1600x1200x75' then booting from install
CD causes the screen go blank. When I reset it to 'setenv output-device
screen' then install CD boots OK and I can see sysinstall on blue
background.

Anybody else having problems when initial resolution set to
1600x1200x75?
