Look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I bet the Xserver was unable to get any  
DDC data from your monitor and assumes it's some low spec (S)VGA  
monitor.
Thank ATI for hiding the DDC gpios in different places for every damn  
chip revision - at least they got it right with the rage 128 and later.

To get around that add something like this to your monitor section:
        HorizSync       30-100
        VertRefresh     60-90
... which matches your actual monitor of course.
