  st0 at scsibus1 target 5 lun 0: <SONY, SDT-9000, 0601> tape removable
  st0: density code 37, 512-byte blocks, write-enabled
  st0: sync (100.00ns offset 15), 8-bit (10.000MB/s) transfers

  What could be the reason for this?

Well, either the other drive is buggy, or our code fails with some drive
that does meet specs.  I would suggest figuring out what kind of scsi
debugging you can turn on and looking at the commands going back and
forth.
