Following up from this, I installed NetBSD 2.1 with no problems and then
upgraded to 3.1 (GENERIC). However I face the same problem with 3.1 -
everything boots fine, no errors or anything but once I reach the login
prompt I cannot type despite the keyboard still being responsive.

Incredibly bizzare. Any more ideas as to what this could possibly be?
