As Bernd already pointed out, there's a `-p' missing on the tar flags.
What documentation was it that you've been following, exactly?

Also, it sounds odd that some doc tells you to first unpack sets, then get 
a new kernel - this is usually a good receipe for trouble.

If you can't login and have console access, one thing that comes to mind 
is pressing L1/STOP+A, then booting singleuser mode with "boot -s" and see 
what you can fix. FWIW, you may want to mount the /-filesystem read/write 
with "fsck -p ; mount -va".
