For the "takes bloody ages to build" problem, you could try a
binary package, e.g.

  ftp://ftp.NetBSD.org/pub/NetBSD/packages/pkgsrc-2005Q3/NetBSD-2.0/spa=
rc64/All/kdebase-3.4.2nb2.tgz

This should work on 2.0 and later, I beleive.

(My build of 2005Q4 hasn't completed quite yet.)
