I had the same problem. I tried to update a NetBSD 2.0.2 to NetBSD 2.1
and got the same problem (Sun Netra T1) (/etc empty but most services
seem to work, i worked in a dir and suddenly the files are gone).

I had problems with the disk in former times, so i thought the disk is
dying. So i decided to spend the machine a new disk. (see other mail
about installation).
