should do the trick without any PCI probing stunts

According to your log X thinks all is well.

It should do it in 16bit. Please try this with the onboard ATI, just to
make sure your LCD likes these timings at all.

Not yet. Either X programmed some weird video timings or your LCD is
picky - no way for me to tell which one it is.
