I just found the monitor specs from:
http://www.monitorworld.com/Monitors/samsung/syncmaster15glecma5377l.html
and the max res is 1024x768.

I just tested 16 bit 1024x768 which is OK in X.

Better description of graphic "weirdness":

There seem to be vertical "bands" of "interlace" about 1cm thick and
maybe 3/4cm apart.

The right 1cm of the screen is a repeated character with interlace
which convers a whole vertical band.

I just swapped the monitor and the same effect persists.
