I'd agree, to a point. I think files that are written frequently ( 
logs, tmp, you name it ) should be separated from files that aren't 
written ( binaries, libs, man pages and so on ) and the OS, 
applications and data should be separated too. I'm a lazy bugger so 
/usr/pkg lives in /usr on all my boxes but /usr/src, /usr/xsrc and so 
on live in a separate partition.
And the argument about /var filling up while /usr has some gigs left is 
just asking for something like the the Logical Volume Manager and 
filesystems that can grow. On an AIX box  for instance you start with a 
bunch of smallish filesystems and a lot of unpartitioned space, then 
grow the filesystems on demand ( and reorg them over night ). Thanks to 
the lvm you can throw in new disks whenever you want and extend 
filesystems to use them without stopping anything. As far as I know 
RAIDframe and vinum do the lvm part but we don't have a growable 
filesystem. Is there any effort going on to get resizable filesystems 
NetBSD?
