My 333MHz U10 manages to compile the basic KDE packages overnight. If 
you have enough memory ( at least 256MB ) it's even usable - KDE is 
more a memory- than a CPU hog. Of course it's not quite as snappy as on 
a 3GHz PC with 1GB RAM but it's no slug either, even with some of the 
eyecandy enabled.
The only real problem is the thread bug which bites sooner or later 
when you're running something memory-intensive using native threads.

And - back on topic - one reason to run a 32bit userland is that many 
packages aren't 64bit clean. You'd be surprised how many programmers 
simply assume that sizeof(int)==sizeof(void *).
