I don't think the battery is bad because all other settings survive a
power-down (but perhaps they are stored in a flash rather than the
battery-backed nvram?).

Thanks, I just found that FAQ via google -> sunhelp.org and that site was
excellent!

After following the quick and dirty repair guide in that FAQ the machine
now works perfectly again. :)
