I think this has been fixed in -current and pulled up to the 1.6 branch
already. The problem is the latency timer, your fix only cures one symptom.

Could you try a newer 1.6.1_RC2 kernel (ftp:/releng.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD-daily)
or a -current one? (snapshot on ftp.netbsd.org:/pub/NetBSD/arch/sparc64/...)
