I've not had much luck with 1.6 release.  Others have had better luck
with current snapshots (but I have not tried it).  But of course,
you shouldn't be running current on an "important machine."

while my machine was up (it would hang intermittently and unpredictably),
I was quite pleased with the performance...

correct.  No X.  But you should be able to run as many 
vty's as you need (depending on memeory).
