I haven't tried to do much in this state (generally just reboot), but it does
sound similar to what you describe (esp. the "can't type random text"... at
4 am typing on my laptop propped up on my knees, my typing still was worse
than average, so a lot of my attempts at getting anything out of the PROM
probably looked at least somewhat like random text 8-).

I've now got conserver set up on one of my systems, so all serial output on
the U5 should now be logged; maybe this will at produce interesting output
next time this happens...
