  I think something is very wrong there.  I've easily saturated 10Mbps 
Ethernet with an SS2, running SunOS 4.

  In fact the first machine I used that had no difficulty saturating a 
10Mbps Ethernet was an SGI 4D-25G, with a MIPS R2000 clocked at 20MHz, a 
far cry from the SS5/170's 170MHz TurboSPARC.

  I could be wrong but I'd point a finger (or perhaps THE finger ;))) 
at SSL.
