Have you tried serial console?  That way at least console output won't
depend on the framebuffer that's acting wonky.

Another option would be to put another framebuffer in the machine and
use that one as console - again, the point is for console to not depend
on the misbehaving framebuffer.  You likely would have to ten-finger
copy boot messages, though.

Another possible way to tell how locked-up it is is to netboot and
snoop the network traffic.  But if a disk boot exhibits no disk
activity then a netboot _probably_ wouldn't exhibit network activity
either.
