Hmmm... I get the impression the system has exhausted certain resources 
and they're not getting returned.

I do wonder about this:

buf16k      16384    7241 1552     5864   875   530   345   345 1     1    0

Any thoughts about why there were 1552 failures? I tend to get those when 
something runs out of memory, but invariably whatever ran out of memory is 
killed, and life goes on. Is something not dying on your system when it 
should?
