FWIW I recently did a clean install of 9.2 on my SS20 (4x200MHz) and
both the GENERIC and the GENERIC.MP kernel boot fine.  I have had one
case of the system locking up under load (compiling Xorg from xsrc with
-j4) using the SMP kernel but that doesn't seem related to your problem.
