I took the plunge, and ordered an EPROM UV eraser (little box with a UV lamp 
and timer) and a cheap EPROM/EEPROM programmer off of eBay tonight.  I'm trying 
to source some cheap AM27C020 EPROM chips for the SS2 so I can have backups in 
case I screw up.  The original EPROM with the 2.4 version of the firmware isn't 
much use to me, but it IS better than having a totally dead machine.

2.9, here we come!  :-)
