Re (4): installing NetBSD on a Sparcstation 2.

> The two cases you mix here are very different: U5 machines ...

Understood. I have only a SS 2, sun4c. Other
people mentioned other machines.

I'm not involved in development or maintenance of
BSD software but by attempting to install it I am
testing it. I can't agree with issueing a series
releases without evidence of functionality. I've
tested 5.0, 5.0.2 and 5.1_RC3 in more than one
medium. None of the cases worked. Good practice
would be to issue an RC but not issue the formal
release until there is evidence that it works where
intended. If a RC has been tested on some target
architectures but not others, and a formal release
is deemed necessary, good practice is to publish
a notice explaining the conditions tested and
otherwise.

No malice is intended in that statement. It is
simply my understanding of professional practice.

Debian abandoned the old Sparcs and I still hope
to see BSD working on this machine.

Best Regards, ... Peter E.
