I did that long ago with an IPX ( onboard cg6 ) and a 21" grayscale 
monitor. Flicker-free, ultra-crisp image :)

I found windowmaker a bit too heavy on colour cell usage but it's my 
1st choice on lower-end machines with 16bit or more colour.
