You're running Xsun, not XFree86. Make sure /usr/X11R6/bin/X points at 
XFree86 - the default is still Xsun since XFree86 needs wscons which 
isn't (yet) available on many sparcs.

Btw. XFree86 is built for sparc in -current, binary snapshots are 
available on releng.netbsd.org.

As far as I know XFree86 has never been tested on a 3GS - I only have a 
3GX - so please tell me if there's anything funny going on.
