Hello Magnus,
              I have a Sparc 20 here in the UK, on my machine there is a 
default xinitrc in /etc/X11/xinit. What I have done is copied this across 
to my home directory as .xinitrc and edited as required.

Have a look at the script /usr/X11R6/bin/start which should help to get X 
running ok and see what is going on.
There is almost no config to be done on sparc, I have a TGX video card.
