I have used fvwm (1.24) on old Sun stations (SS1+ running SunOS 4.1.4)
and it worked fine, after a proper configuration. A SS5 should have no
problem with it. My own favourite configuration has very few bells and
whistle; for instance, it does not have virtual desktops (I just don't
like virtual desktops).

I have heard that fvwm-2 is rumoured to use _less_ memory than fvwm-1
with an equivalent configuration, so this may be worth a try.
