It would help if you said what, if any, "other machine" you have.

For instance, my NetBSD/SPARC machine (SPARCserver 20) has no
head, it's connected as a serial console.  My PowerBook doesn't
have a "serial port", but it's connected to the SPARCserver 20's
console port.  How?  Via a Keyspan USA-28X USB Twin Serial Adapter:

If your "other machine" is a Linux PC, the Keyspan supports
Linux (but not NetBSD/i386) as well ...
