Subject: boot stops at "root file system type: ffs"

I have practically the exact same hardware setup running fine on
another SPARCstation IPC. In fact about the only difference is that
the disk on the machine I'm having problems with identifies itself
as "300X", while the okay one says "300N". However, for some reason,
this one (300X) won't complete its bootup. The problem sounds very much
like that described in:

https://citadelle.intrinsec.com/mailing/current/HTML/ml_netbsd-bugs/5106.html
Someone suggested that I turn off tagged command queueing and
indeed that fixes my problem and the machine boots fine again.

Is there some way I can turn off tagged queueing with a command line
switch to the /netbsd kernel before it starts to boot up in order to
check this out, or am I going to have to try to compile a kernel on
another machine and then somehow transfer that over to the cripled one?

OR, is this some other problem? Any hints welcome. Appending the boot
up messages below. TIA
