You're absolutely right Julian, my bad.

Installboot ran but the machine still didn't run, however :)

I've sorted it now, turns out I need the secondary loader from the 2.0
release (which I think someone was getting at earlier but I was struggling
to understand). I extracted base.tgz to a temporary area then ran
installboot from there, using the new boot and bootxx and the machine is now
up and running with a 2.0 GENERIC.MP kernel.

I'm going to carry on with that upgrade guide I've been referring to so far
now and see how I get on. Thanks for the help guys.
