Possible?  Oh, it's certainly _possible_.

Whether it's possible with existing software?  Probably, if you're
willing to run Sun's server (which probably also means Sun's OS).

Whether it's possible with open-source software?  My guess is a
definite "maybe". :)  If you're willing to run with dumb 24-bit on the
cgfourteen, there's a decent chance Xsun24 can do what you want.
Whether something XFree86 can do this I don't know, though your failure
seems to indicate it can't.  I built a server that gives both 8bit and
24bit on the cgfourteen, but it (a) is not capable of multiheading and
(b) doesn't run on current.  Someone was working on taking what I did
and rolling it into xsrc, but I don't know the status of that project.
