From what I have seen, yes, the old boot loader will work ok as long
as the kernel is not too large.  I have had a machine that failed to
boot the generic kernel but would quite happily boot on a customised
kernel from the same sources - the only difference was that I
configured out support for all the things I knew were not in the
machine.
