Hello again. As a further followup to this problem, I've filed
problem kern/21107, which contains patches to fix the problem on the 1.6
branch and the -current branch. I believe it will be committed soon to the
-current branch, but might not make it into the 1.6 branch before 1.6.1 is
pushed out the door. (I hope it is, but it is quite late in the game.).
In any case, I wanted folks to know about the problem report and the fix
because it seems like a very serious bug which potentially affects all
architectures, and, in my case at least, means the difference between rock
stable and completely unusable.

So, I'm casting this message to a wide audience in order to catch
those who might be experiencing the trouble, but who haven't yet reported
it.
