There is no png package, and to make png I need zlib. There is no zlib
   package, and when I try to build zlib I am told I need to build a newer
   pkg_install. I can't build pkg_install because I haven't installed the 'text'
   set (and there is no package for pkg_install). I only have 12 MB of free
   space (I have already moved /usr/share to another machine to mount over NFS).
   If someone can point me to a png package it would be much appreciated. (An
   old one is okay, I'm the only user here and the machine is firewalled.)

if you have NFS space, you can use this for building, etc... it
sounds like you need to acquire a larger disk though :-)
   
   Do the packages on the mirrors get deleted once an exploit is found?
    Shouldn't they be rebuilt once new versions are available?

definately...but we have nothing dedicated to do this.
