In a word: Don't.

I really hate scripts/programs that beep. Especially if other people are
in the room, too.

Other than that, how about just printing the BEL character? (ASCII 7,
^G). How that is interpreted depends on the terminal, and may even be
user-configurable, which is a lot better than beeping unconditionally.
xterm, e. g. just flashes the window background, local text consoles
usually beep on the hardware speaker, which is why none of my PCs has
its speaker connected.
